Metro Merchants Baseball

est. 2000

State tournament appearances 2002, 2005, 2012

Merch lose battle to the Rats: The Merchants and Rats battled to a 5-3 Rats victory.  The Merchants would score the first 2 runs in the 3rd inning with a big 2 out 2 rbi double by David Olson.  The Rats answered back with 1 in the 4th inning.  Then in the 5th starting pitcher Alex Kempf got wild loading the bases on 3 straight walks followed by a 2 rbi double by the Rats.  The Rats added on another run to make it a 4-2 game.  David Olson got another RBI in the 5th to close it to a 1 run game.  Unfortunately the Rats added on an insurance run in the 7th and held on for the 5-3 victory.  The Merchants left 9 runners stranded on for the game with the Rats pitcher doing a great job pitching out of jams.  Merchant of the game goes to David Olson who went 3-3 with a walk and recorded all 3 of the Merchants RBI's.

Long time P Nash studs Meister and Laukkonen meet again on the bump: The Merchants offense got after Meister right out of the gates getting 3 runs in the top of the 1st.  Unfortunately after that the Merchants remembered they hadn't played baseball in a week and a half and showed some rust the rest of the game.  Meister shut the Merch down the rest of the game and the Pub clawed back into the game tying it at 3's in the 5th inning.  The Pub put the game away in the 6th with 3 more runs for a 6-3 victory.

Merchants walk off the Blue Sox: Sick of being on a losing streak, the Merchants knew that there is only one cure...new uniforms.  Just to be safe we got 2 sets to go along with our new hats.  As it was foretold, the new unis came through in a tight ballgame against the Blue Sox.  Big Dave took the bump and pitched well giving up 7 hits and 2 runs to the Sox.  Holding the Sox to only 2 runs was even more impressive considering his defense also had 5 errors behind him.  The Merchants took a 2-0 lead after 3 innings scattering a few hits and taking advantage of a few errors.  The Blue Sox answered with 2 runs in the 4th inning to tie it up.  It was a pitchers duel the rest of the way bringing us to the bottom of the 7th with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out.  Willie Fust, with a 3-0 count and his parents in the stands, swung away and collected his 3rd hit of the night for the walk off win.  Willie got really cocky after the game in the parking lot but was quickly brought back down to his normal Willie level of cockiness by his teammates.  He also brought Spotted Cow beer so he wins Merchant of the game.  (Please don't tell him though)

Also happy 4th of July to everyone!  Have a fun/safe birthday party for America! And if you see Andy or Dom, remind them that they need new baseballs and a new score book by July 9th.

Merchants lose bad again:  The Merchants came out short a couple guys again with guys playing out of position and it showed defensively.  The Mudcats were by far the better team hitting the ball all over the park racking up 13 hits on the day, and their pitcher mega grunted his way to a gem of a game only giving up 3 hits in the shutout.  The final score...12-0 after 6 innings.  Merchant of the game goes to our new hats we wore for the first time.  They looked great and will look even better with our soon to come new jerseys no matter the score.  (yeah I'm digging for positives)

PS: Sorry for losing old write ups, tried to upload a picture of coach Andy Powell's haircut and it was so hideous it temporarily crashed the site and deleted all the write ups.  Lesson learned.

Cobras destroy Merchants 15-3:  It should have been worse even.  Cobras scored 11 in the 1st inning and cruised from there.  The only more embarrassing thing would have been a forfeit...which was 10 minutes away from happening.  Shout out to the 9 Merchants that showed up (really?!), and Alex Kempf for battling through 4 innings, and to the Cobras who could have been much much meaner.  In a fun note both Big Dave and Kempf got base hits...unfortunately we'll never hear the end of it...(pitchers)
